Aschehoug

H. Aschehoug & Co has been a leading and independent publishing house in Norway for more than 130 years, including Aschehoug, Universitetsforlaget, Forlaget Oktober and Gan Forlag in addition to the part-owned Kunnskapsforlaget and Lydbokforlaget. Universitetsforlaget is a publishing house dedicated solely to university, college and journals. Aschehoug also owns considerable shares in the bookstore chain Norli, De Norske Bokklubbene, the distributor Forlagsentralen and Pensumtjeneste.

Customer status

Data provided by the publishing houses and Forlagsentralen was the basic management information, which was published by manual processing and extensive use of spreadsheets.

Customer vision

Aschehoug wanted to implement a new reporting system which would produce and distribute relevant management information for the publishing house management on all levels.

The broad mandate included assessment of the data quality both with regard to data source representation (code structures, number series etc) and data accuracy (errors, duplicates etc).

Another of the project’s ambitions was to extend the existing management model registration and introduce deviation reporting and notification/warning to a larger extent than before.

NSA’s role and contribution

NSA was in charge of project management, development, testing and implementation. We also assisted in the analysis phase, identifying which key figures to include and how the key figures would be displayed in a portal and a set of reports. During implementation, data were downloaded from the sources, including historic data dating back to 2000.

Results

NSA designed a portal with presentation of 50 key figures, using integrated solutions in Oracle Portal. We also provided a set of reports in Oracle Discoverer for analyses and procedures (extraction, tranformation, storage) for daily updates.

As a result, Aschehoug has more up to date and complex sales figures and a good overview through a portal used by approximately 180 staff, ranging from the publishing house management to sales/marketing and finance.
