Oracle Exadata Mini?

One of our customers has made the step to buy Exadata. Right now I'm reading through the documentation, and I really like what I see. My favorite part of the Exadata is the technology in the storage servers. I would like to have all "my" Oracle databases running on this software! How would I change the storage servers if I was Oracle?

Several items would appear on the top of my wishlist:

1. Lower price. The performance of the Exadata is great, however not all customers are willing to pay for such performance.

2. Integration. I would like the Exadata storage servers to be integrated into an existing database environment (on 11gR2) as a replacement for SANs.

3. Flexibility. The modular approach needs to be kept so that we can buy one more box in case we need more performance or disk space.

How about "Sun Oracle Exadata Mini"?

Sun Oracle Exadata Mini is a smart storage solution that can be plugged into an existing database structure and boosts the performance of the current environment without spending lots of extra money on a completely new rack with shiny Sun Oracle boxes.

One way to scale down the performance and price of this configuration would be to replace the Infiniband with NFS over 10GbE. This does not have to be so far fetched. Kevin Closson - one of the performance architectst on Exadata - argues for using NFS with databases due its price/performance/complexity ratio. James Morle writes that fibre channel is dead. He claims that NFS over ethernet will replace FC in low/medium performance configurations, and Infiniband in high-end configurations.

For the time being I would keep the storage server almost as it is. What I want is smart scan, storage indexes, predicate filtering at the cell level, and flash cache. These technologies bring the greatest gain to customers over regular SANs.

On the other hand, it would do without the powerful "Enterprise features", such as hybrid columnar compression, smart scan of encrypted data, data mining at the storage server, and the I/O resource manager. These can be the bonus features customers would get by buying the whole Exadata package.

Let me conclude with an analogy. Tesla Motors have the world's fastest electric car in serial production - the Tesla Roadster. It has the performance of a Porsche 911 without the carbon footprint. Tesla needs this "spearpoint" both in order to prove their technology, as well as to get a name in the market. Their next car is the Model S, a 5 seat sedan, marketed for the masses. This is what most people will buy and where the company will make most profit.

Ideally, the Sun Oracle Exadata Mini would be such a "family sedan" in the database storage market. As a consultant I could then advice the customers: Use whatever server vendor you choose, but for storage the Sun Oracle Exadata Mini is the best value for money you can get.
